The film opens with a group of cowboys riding through the desert. They are led by Billy the Kid (Reeves),a young outlaw who is wanted for murder. Billy and his gang are on their way to rob a bank in the town of Lincoln, New Mexico. However, they are intercepted by a posse led by Sheriff Pat Garrett (Swayze). A gunfight ensues, and Billy and his gang are killed.
Meanwhile, Billy's brother, John Tunstall (Mortensen),is a wealthy rancher who is trying to bring law and order to the town of Lincoln. Tunstall is opposed by a group of corrupt businessmen led by John Tunstall (Powers Boothe). Tunstall is killed by Tunstall's men, and Billy vows to avenge his brother's death.
Billy and Garrett team up to track down Tunstall's killers. They eventually find them in the town of Fort Sumner. A gunfight ensues, and Tunstall's killers are killed. Billy and Garrett are both wounded in the gunfight, but they survive. In the end, Billy and Garrett ride off into the sunset, leaving the town of Lincoln behind.
Blaze of Glory is a well-made Western that is full of action and adventure. The film is beautifully shot, and the cast is excellent. Reeves, Swayze, and Mortensen all give strong performances. The film is also notable for its score, which was composed by Ennio Morricone.
