The Assassination
On November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas. He was shot and killed by Lee Harvey Oswald, a former U.S. Marine who had defected to the Soviet Union.
The assassination took place as Kennedy's motorcade was traveling through Dealey Plaza. Oswald fired three shots from a sixth-floor window of the Texas School Book Depository. The first shot missed Kennedy, but the second and third shots hit him in the head and neck.
Kennedy was rushed to Parkland Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:00 p.m. CST.
The Aftermath
